My Pumpkins are Plentiful and Big

August 6, 2008 / by kathyneilsen

No this isn't a metaphor, I am actually growing pumpkins. I plant pumpkins every year because I just love them and I don't have to buy any in the fall. Usually I grow Jack O Lantern pumpkins and Big Max. Occasionally I'll get a decent size pumpkin but most are of average size. Last year I grew white pumpkins and really enjoyed them. In fact I still have two from last year.

This year when I went to the garden center to buy seeds they had Atlantic Giant seeds. If you know anything about pumpkins these Atlantic Giants are from the worlds biggest pumpkins and every year this strain produces world record weight pumpkins. (I sound like a pumpkin commercial)http://www.gomestic.com/Cooking/A-History-of-the-Amazing-Pumpkin.48686

Anyways, my pumpkins are doing well and some are getting to be a good size. Some are already orange. Do they continue to grow once they turn orange?

Looks like you are having fun in the garden, when pumpkins  start to turn color they are pretty much the size they will be, we grew a few pumpkins , but lots of acorn squash and butternut squash along with sweetcorn , we had 30 acres and three cows , two sows , chickens , so we always had plenty to eat during the war when everything was rationed , we sold some and gave some to others who could not afford to pay for it, we had patches on our patches some times , but they were always clean and grandmother baked the best bread  and cakes, pies, and cookies  in town  ,we did not have alot of money  BUT we were rich in other ways .......

I've always been so enchanted with growing things, probably because thats all my grandmother ever talked about when they had their Minnesota dairy farm. I have lots of fruit trees and always have a garden. Some years it does better than others. Since we've been in this house only a few years I don't have things the way I want (compost pile) but I'm  working on it.

Great garden!  I wish I could grow pumpkins out here.  Our season is too short.  But I have some wonderful pumpkin memories from when we lived in California.
